It’s been two years since he took a break from the public eye due to the surgical removal of a granuloma near his vocal cords, which didn’t go as per the plan. Now, with a second surgery scheduled, pop and blues rock singer John Mayer has scored a global hit with his return album, his fifth — Born and Raised.

“I took everything off with this record — the idea of being a celebrity, the past — better and worse, being known, having to write a fifth record. It was about going back to the process of having a great idea that you could play on the piano or a guitar. 
This is not about will anyone like this?” says the 34-year-old. Ask him if he regrets the two-year break, he says, “I was glad it took long … I wanted to be forgotten. 

I wanted to be the only person remembering me for a while, and at times it felt like I was, which was good, because I could work in silence.” Mayer is also upbeat about India. 

“I have heard a lot about India and the music scene is huge there,” says the singer, who is also aware that Bollywood films are “very dramatic and colourful” and that Indian food is “very spicy”.
